In the U.S., Mechanical-Electrical-Plumbing (MEP) engineers are licensed to ensure the HVAC, electrical and water delivery systems they design meet a variety of essential operational and safety criteria. The low-voltage systems that move data, however, are usually beyond the expertise of MEP firms.

While designers for specific systems such as security or AV may be available, expertise in the underlying technology infrastructure is often lacking.

A Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD®) is an experienced telecommunication professional who has demonstrated skills and expertise in the design, integration and installation of Information Technology Systems (ITS), both in the field and through rigorous testing and instructional development. Early involvement of an RCDD on a project can save a great deal of time and money in avoiding costly Change Orders.

BICSI® is a professional association supporting the ITS industry including:

• ​Voice and data
• Audio and video technologies
• Electronic safety and security
• Project management

This encompasses the design, integration and installation of: pathways and spaces; fiber- and copper-based distribution systems; wireless-based systems, and; infrastructure that supports the transportation of information and associated signaling between and among communications and information gathering devices.

RCDD Prerequisites (1)
Prerequisites for the RCDD credential include at least one of the following:

• Five years Information Communications Systems (ICT) design experience
• Two years verifiable ICT design experience and three years additional ICT equivalents chosen from combinations of experience, approved education and approved ICT license/certification

Design includes the development of design plans for ICT integration. using site surveys, user needs analysis, work print creation, project specifications, RFP creation and pre-project coordination with PEs, architects, etc.
